2mm — A Neurosurgeon's Memoir by Dr. Ravi Kumar

A Neurosurgeon's Journey Through the Microscopic World Between Life and Death

“Patients grant us more intimate trust than they have to anyone else in their lives. Trusting us, quite literally, with the very fabric of who they are.”

Every person who has ever undergone brain surgery has entrusted their memories, their personality, their entire self to a surgeon working in a space measured in millimeters. 2mm takes you inside that world.

Through intimate surgical narratives and unflinching personal reflection, Dr. Ravi Kumar chronicles seven years of neurosurgery residency: the sleepless nights, the patients lost, the patients saved, and the impossible decisions made in spaces smaller than the width of your fingernail. He doesn't sanitize the experience. He puts you in his shoes.

Readers of When Breath Becomes Air, Do No Harm, and Complications will find in 2mm a memoir of equal emotional weight, and a uniquely honest look at what modern medical training actually demands of the people who survive it.

“Before every surgery, I go through the same ritual in my mind. I imagine the patient on the table is my father… My sister… My wife… My child.”
“Two millimeters, Ravi. Two millimeters in the wrong direction, and it's the difference between life and death. Between a good day and a very, very bad day.”
“I could have saved her. I had the ability. I knew what needed to be done. I should have fought harder. But I didn't. And now she was gone. That weight has never lifted. Not then. Not now. Not ever.”
